Subsoil risks

Historic context

Wallonia has a rich industrial and mining past. The soil and subsoil risks department assesses the consequences related to the abandonment of tools, underground or surface infrastructures, and waste from this mining activity.

The consequences can affect underground and surface waters, fields as diverse as soil geochemistry, the stability of embankments or foundations, safety and human health, and the effects on local fauna and flora.

The impact of Wallonia’s industrial past remains important for our environment long after the cessation of any operation which has left, as the only witnesses visible in our Walloon landscape, those black and green hills called heaps.
